ANAND – THE MILK CAPITAL OF INDIA

Anand, the administrative centre of Gujarat’s Anand district, is known as the milk capital of India; it is famous for Amul Dairy. The head office of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. is established in Anand City. The city which is placed 35 km from Vadodara features Asia’s largest milk co-operative, the Amul dairy which jointly owned by 3.6 million milk producers in Gujarat. It is one of the most successful co-operative ventures in the country having National Dairy Development Board of India and Anand Agriculture University.

The Milk Capital of India is blessed with science nature of and makes a perfect gateway destination. The place for spending some time quit away from daily routine life. They are perfect for discovering the culture of Gujarat. The most popular place is Papi Kondalu. It is so beautiful place compared with that of Kashmir. The tourist called place Munivatar. The city is popular for the tourist places like Swami Narayan Temple, Amul dairy, Amul chocolate factory, co-operative, museum, big lion multiplex, Iskon Temple, Kailash Nath Mahadev Temple, Shri Nilkanth Mahadev Temple, Mata Teki and Patel Santan Hira Lal Temple.

Dr Verghese Kurien, who completed his master degree in dairy engineering, established the world famous diary in 1948. The rate of co-operative was to procure the milk from the farmer and to pay the amount according to the quality of milk. They recommended the name “Amulya” it is Sanskrit word. The full form of AMUL is Anand Milk Union Limited. This milk can be transferred to nearby milk chiller unit on the same day. It was kept in storage there for few hours after that transfer for the pasteurisation. Finally, transfer to the cooling and packaging unit. After that milk is delivered to the wholesaler and retailer for sales.

In 1964 our Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was invited to Anand to introduce the new cattle – feed plant of Amul. Amul was sourcing the milk from farmers and helping them to improve their economic conditions. In 1965 combined effort resulted in the creation of the National Dairy Development Board. Dr Kurien took charge of NDDB and began his work on the overall pattern in Anand as well as the other parts of the country. At the same time, the demand for milk was growing faster than the supply of milk. Money is the biggest problem faced by NDDBB and taken the loan World Bank.

The World Bank president comes to India and approval the loan amount without any condition. As a result of all the efforts made, Amul is currently 15 million milk producers and 144246 dairy co-operative societies across the country. Today Amul is the largest milk producing brand in the whole of the country and serve dairy product for the millions consumer in India.
