India’s water crisis may affect 10 crore people

India exports more water-dependent goods than any other country, but the country itself ready to run out of water. Two lakhs people in the country die each year because of the lack of safe water access. India’s water crisis may affect 10 crore people as Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and 18 other cities are likely to reach zero groundwater levels by the end of 2020. Chennai has more rains and better water resources than any other metro cities, but three rivers, four water bodies, five wetlands and six forests have already dried in this city.

India will face a lot of problems due to the water crisis

  1. 54% of the country’s groundwater is declining faster than usual recovery time.
  2. The groundwater level in 21 major cities including Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore will dry up entirely by 2020 and affect 100 million people.
  3. Water levels in India’s major source have fallen to 21 % of the average of the last tenner.
  4. India only captures 8 % of its rainfall among the lowest in the world.
  5. India has also been poor in treatment and re-use of household wastewater about 80% of the water reaching households in India.
  6. Due to the growing population of India, water demand is increasing day by day.  In the coming days, such incidents tend to increase due to lack of proper water supply and improper water management in the country.
  7. India’s ability to produce power is decreasing, and 40% thermal power plants are in areas facing high water stress.
  8. Tank and ponds are infringed.
  9. As per Niti Ayog report forecasts water demand will be twice the present supply and India could lose up to 6 % of its GDP.

Key solutions to India’s water crisis

  1. To make our irrigation and water system tractable to modern concepts.
  2. India’s water crisis will need well-balanced policies, very careful strategy, and a massive amount of public participation.
  3. Ensuring the minimum pollution in both urban areas and Industry.
  4. Groundwater can be brought up collecting water through the lowest in cities through this the wells and tube wells van be received.
  5. By collecting rainwater harvesting in small-medium, we can avoid flooding like Mahapriles.
  6. Rainwater can be used in a better and easier manner in building construction, prevention of water pollution, irrigation and toilets which can prove to be beneficial for us.
  7. Access to pure water should be on high priority.
  8. The Water sector in terms of irrigation projects or water schemes.
  9. We need to balance between our water needs and that of the river its self.
