The third-largest city of Gujarat, Vadodara (previously known as Baroda) used to be called Chandanavati after its ruler Raja Chandan. It was changed to Vadodara in 1974, and the name was derived from Sanskrit word vatodar which stands for the belly of a Banyan tree. Located on the banks of the Vishwamitri River, the city is known for Maharaja Sayajirao University and the residence of the Gaekwads – Baroda State’s Maratha royal family. It is one of the most important cultural, educational, and industrial hubs of western India.
