Rao Hamirji established the District Head Quarter of Gujarat’s Kutch District in 1510. Rao Khengarji I, in 1549, introduced it as the capital of Cutch State which turned as Suleiman Nagar after 1590 when the ruler was forced to acknowledge Mughal supremacy. Bhuj was taken three times in 1786 (by Meghji Seth), in 1801 (by Hansraj), and in 1808 (by Fateh Muhammad). However, the hill fort of Bhujia was captured by Sir William Keir in 1819. Only 20,000 people would live in this city that time. Occurred on Jan. 26, 2001, the earthquake of Bhuj (felt throughout much of northwestern India and parts of Pakistan) took more than 20,000 lives and injured more than 150,000 others. Hence, the population of Bhuj as per Census India 2001 was 102637.
